Updates on Bladder Prolapse Treatment

Common to almost a quarter of the adult women population in the United States, there are still many who are confused about the medical condition known as bladder prolapse. The bladder is a pelvic organ with a hollow body. It functions as storage for urine, making urination infrequent and voluntary. The bladder, with all the neighboring organs like the urethra, uterus, and rectum, is held in place by the connective tissues that line walls of the vagina. This network of connective tissues envelops the walls of the vagina. In older women, these tissues lose its elasticity causing any of the pelvic organs to shift out of place. This condition is named pelvic organ prolapse.

In bladder prolapse, the bladder drops into the front wall of the vagina causing a number of debilitating symptoms like pelvic pain, tissues bulging out of the vagina, incomplete voiding, stress incontinence, infections, low back pain, and dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse). Women who have had their uterus removed, and those who have had multiple childbirths are most possible to acquire pelvic organ prolapse. Women who have had menopause are also likely to develop this condition. During menopause, there is a lower estrogen level in a woman’s body. Low estrogen in the body affects the production of collagen. With a low collagen level, the pelvic muscles and tissues lose their elasticity and breaks down.

There are only a few treatment options for this condition. One of these is the use of vaginal mesh implant. It is known to many women as the modern treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence and Pelvic Organ Prolapse. But, it has been associated with harmful after effects that are hard to correct if not permanent. These complications include mesh erosion, infections, pain, bleeding, urinary problems, pelvic organ perforation, and recurrence of prolapse.

Recipients of vaginal mesh who were affected with its complications filed various lawsuits against makers of these deadly medical devices. There are thousands of lawsuits filed, and there’s a great chance this number will increase because there are still many mesh manufacturers producing these medical devices. In fact, because of the bulk of individual and class action lawsuits filed, recipients and a few mesh manufacturers have petitioned the Judicial Panel for the consolidation of these lawsuits in the same federal court.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acted promptly on these issues by issuing health notification about the potential danger of vaginal mesh products. However, there are still many doctors performing vaginal mesh implantation to repair prolapsed pelvic organs like the bladder, uterus, rectum, and urethra; these have caused the increase of vaginal mesh lawsuit in the United States. Among these, urethral and bladder prolapse are the two most common forms.
